Black Forest Cake: How to Bake This Decadent Dessert at Home

Introduction

Nothing marks a special occasion like a classic Black Forest Cake. The delicious combination of light chocolate sponge, rich cherry filling, and smooth whipped cream is an irresistible delight for every dessert lover. In this blog post, we will guide you step-by-step on how to recreate this mouthwatering German delight at home.

Ingredients

  • 200g all-purpose flour
  • 400g sugar
  • 75g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (24 oz) Morello cherries, drained
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Chocolate shavings, for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  4. Pour the boiling water into the batter and mix well. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the cakes comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. While the cakes are cooling, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  7. Once the cakes are completely cooled, use a long serrated knife to slice each cake in half horizontally, ending up with six thin layers of cake.
  8. Place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a thin layer of whipped cream on top, and distribute a handful of cherries evenly over the cream. Repeat with the remaining layers, cream, and cherries.
  9. Spread the remaining whipped cream on the top and sides of the cake, and garnish with chocolate shavings.
